Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of Marin General Hospital’s New Hospital Building Project – MGH 2.0
GREENBRAE, CA — MGH 2.0, Marin General Hospital’s $535 million hospital replacement building project, officially kicked off today with hospital leaders and invited guests taking part in a groundbreaking ceremony on the hospital campus. When complete, the new hospital replacement building will meet or exceed the latest state-mandated standards for earthquake safety and be a best-practices environment that will enable the hospital’s medical teams to do their best work and improve patient outcomes.
Phase 1, scheduled to open for patient care in mid-2020, includes a new modernized four-story, 260,000-square-foot hospital replacement building. The new towers will house 114 private rooms, an expanded emergency department and 6 new operating/procedural suites. Special amenities and landscape features, such as rooftop gardens, balconies, and natural light in every patient room, will support a healing environment for patients and families. After the new hospital towers open in 2020, work will begin on a five-story, 100,000-square-foot ambulatory services building and a second parking structure.
The team responsible for making the MGH 2.0 vision a reality includes architect Perkins Eastman, general contractor McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. and SWA Group as the landscape architect. The original hospital, first opened in 1952, will continue to operate throughout the construction process. The project team just completed MGH 2.0’s first parking facility, a five-and-half-level, net-zero structure with roof-top solar panels, to serve the current and future hospital.
Representing the community and speaking at the ceremony were Steve Kinsey, President, Marin County Board of Supervisors, Doug McConnell, current host of KNTV’s OpenRoad and a stroke survivor, and Reta Haynes and Mary Barbara Schultz, Honorary Capital Campaign Co-chairs. Representing Marin General Hospital and speaking were Lee Domanico, Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Bennett, MD, past Chief of Staff and Capital Campaign Cabinet Member, and Kate Oppegaard, RN, 2015 Jackie Jewell Excellence in Nursing Award recipient.
