Marin General Hospital’s Braden Diabetes Center Partners with Madison Clinic at UCSF to Offer Pediatric Diabetes Services and Support

GREENBRAE, CA — Marin General Hospital today announced it has begun offering first-class pediatric diabetes services and support at the Braden Diabetes Center – the only American Diabetes Association-recognized program in Marin County – in partnership with the Madison Clinic for Pediatric Diabetes at UCSF and under the leadership of Saleh Adi, MD, a renowned pediatric endocrinologist and diabetes specialist. Now, thanks to the vision and initiative of Bruce Braden, co-founder of the Braden Diabetes Center, Marin County families can receive expert pediatric diabetes care right here in our community.
Before Marin General Hospital’s Braden Diabetes Center collaborated with UCSF Health to offer pediatric diabetes services in Marin, families had to travel outside of the county to receive medical care for their children with diabetes. The frequency at which these families require support, the consequences of not having care for the children in a timely fashion, and the family challenges of balancing careers, school, work and extracurricular activity schedules, makes the proximity of care very important.

Having to go into San Francisco for care has been a strain on our community, as it requires one or both parents to take time off from work and frequently pull children from school to make these appointments, essential to their care,” said Marcena Hopkins Peterson, Founder, T1DMarin, the Type 1 Diabetes Support Group in Marin. “To have Dr. Adi, a renowned physician, director of UCSF's Madison Clinic, and a passionate supporter and beloved friend to our community in Marin, changes so much for our families. Dr. Adi and his team of specially-trained pediatric nurses and dietitians, all of whom are certified diabetes educators, offer children and their families one-on-one care and group support for type 1 and type 2 diabetes, along with the critical information for managing their illness, such as intensive insulin management, pump training, continuous glucose monitoring, and medical nutrition therapy.
“Expanding our diabetes support and medical services to our pediatric population and their families is a tremendous benefit of the collaboration we formed in 2013 with UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. The link allows us to take advantage of and learn from one of the nation’s preeminent pediatric specialists, Dr. Saleh Adi, known for his extensive expertise in pediatric diabetes and endocrinology,” said Lee Domanico, Chief Executive Officer, Marin General Hospital.
Dr. Adi and his team help families adapt to a new diagnosis or live with diabetes in the best way possible. The care regimen for a child with type 1 diabetes is considerable, and may include six to eight injections of insulin and eight to 12 finger sticks to check blood sugar each day, counting carbohydrates at all meals and snacks to determine insulin doses, educating relatives, teachers, day care providers, friends and babysitters so they know what to do to prevent a medical emergency, and checking a night time blood sugar if sports or extra fun play occurs during the day. The Braden Diabetes Center team provides education at least annually within the Marin County school districts to teachers, principals and support staff.

These new pediatric services are an addition to the diabetes education program already offered by the Braden Diabetes Center in Marin schools. “I am so pleased to see that children with diabetes no longer need to leave Marin to get medical attention and in-depth education for managing this disease. It makes me proud to see the Braden Diabetes Center continue to grow as a powerful resource for those who live with Diabetes, one that allows them to live a long and healthy life,” said Bruce Braden, co-founder of the Braden Diabetes Center.
