Marin General Hospital Announces First-Ever Endowed Position
More than $1 Million Dollars raised in honor of renowned cardiologist, David C. Sperling, MD, FACC
Greenbrae, CA – Marin General Hospital and Marin General Hospital Foundation are delighted to honor Dr. David C. Sperling’s accomplished career and extraordinary contributions to cardiac care with the establishment of the Haynes Cardiovascular Institute’s David C. Sperling, MD, endowed medical directorship – the first of its kind for this hospital. Dr. Sperling has been a visionary leader, growing the physician practice and ensuring that Marin General Hospital and its cardiovascular physicians are at the leading edge of patient care.
“I am deeply honored to have my name associated with the first endowed position at Marin General Hospital,” said Dr. Sperling. “I am pleased to have been able to contribute to the successful efforts of attracting top-tier talent and continuing to fund Marin General Hospital’s premier cardiac programs and services.”
Dr. David C. Sperling is a skilled and compassionate cardiologist whose accomplished career at Marin General Hospital has spanned more than four decades. He started his cardiology practice in 1975 and has dedicated his professional life to caring for individuals with a myriad of cardiac conditions. He has also been a devoted advocate of Marin General, single-handedly raising tens of millions of dollars to ensure that our community hospital has the ability to provide the most advanced procedures, technology and facilities fulfilling the promise of comprehensive state-of-the-art care for our community.
In addition to partnering with generous philanthropists and grateful patients to make his visions a reality, Dr. Sperling has been a tireless mentor to his team of 18 cardiologists. Dr. Sperling has served as Director of the Haynes Cardiovascular Institute since its inception in 2009, two terms on the Marin General Hospital Foundation's Board of Directors and will be joining an advisory board to the Marin General Hospital Legacy Circle.
The holder of the David C. Sperling, MD, endowed medical directorship will oversee the hospital’s mission to advance innovative, compassionate care and to ensure that the department of cardiology continues to attract the most accomplished specialists – preserving Marin General Hospital’s tradition of excellence.
Net income on investments not to exceed five percent of the endowment, which now exceeds $1 Million dollars, will be directly used to fund the prestigious position. Local philanthropist and longtime Marin resident Reta Haynes generously provided the lead gift to establish the Endowment.
“I am so pleased to honor David in this way. Dr. Sperling has been a friend and physician of the family for almost 25 years and he is so deserving of having this endowment in his name. I know that my husband, Bill, would agree,” said Reta Haynes. “The endowed directorship is a gift in perpetuity that will provide funds to support the activities and the programs of the Haynes Cardiovascular Institute, benefiting our community for many years into the future.”
This position oversees the Haynes Cardiovascular Institute, including coordinating the efforts of cardiologists who perform interventional, structural and electrophysiology procedures as well as offering consultative cardiology, heart failure management and disease prevention. To support both inpatient and outpatient programs requires the coordination of budgeting, recruitment, and long-term planning with the engagement of the medical staff of the hospital. In addition, the Medical Director provides input to Administration on the strategic direction and budgetary priorities of the cardiac program. Cardiology continues to be an area of growth and innovation, and Marin General Hospital intends to continue to be a leader in the field, as it has been for decades.
“The David C. Sperling Endowment will vastly improve the quality of care for local residents, from lifesaving technology and equipment to skilled personnel,” said Lee Domanico, Chief Executive Officer of Marin General Hospital and Marin Healthcare District. “We are proud to continue generating momentum for our healing and state of the art programs by attracting the best and brightest physicians to Marin.”
