National Study Finds Marin General Hospital in Top 10 percent in Nation for Stroke Care and Pulmonary Care
GREENBRAE, CA — Stroke Care and Pulmonary Care at Marin General Hospital is among the top 10 percent in the nation, according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. This achievement is part of findings featured in the Healthgrades 2019 Report to the Nation, which found that clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at almost 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions, as well as reporting on outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia.* Marin General Hospital is the only hospital in the North Bay1 to receive a Five-Star Distinction for Stroke Treatment for 7 years in a row (2013-2019). Marin General Hospital is also the only hospital in the North Bay1 to receive the Stroke Care Excellence Award™ for 6 years in a row (2014-2019) as well as the Pulmonary Care Excellence Award™ for 2 consecutive years (2018-2019).
This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. From 2015 through 2017, patients treated at hospitals receiving the Stroke Care Excellence Award™ have, on average, a 38.1 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. And patients treated at hospitals receiving the Pulmonary Care Excellence Award™ have, on average, a 49.1 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
“It is an honor to receive these accolades from Healthgrades, and to be recognized for our outstanding stroke and pulmonary care,” said Marin General Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Lee Domanico. “The fact that Marin General Hospital is the only hospital in the North Bay to receive a Five-Star Distinction for Stroke Treatment for seven years in a row is a true testament to the exceptional work being done at Marin General Hospital and our stellar medical team. We are continuously striving to provide best-in-class quality and clinical excellence for our patients in the Marin community, and we are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts.”
Marin General Hospital was also recognized for the following clinical achievements:
- Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Failure in 2019
- Five Star Recipient for Treatment of Stroke for 7 Years in a Row (2013-2019)
- Five Star Recipient for Treatment of Pneumonia for 2 Years in a Row (2018-2019)
- Five Star Recipient for Treatment of Sepsis for 7 Years in a Row (2013-2019)
- Five Star Recipient for Treatment of Diabetic Emergencies in 2019
“With so many choices for care, consumers often find that their health journey can be difficult to navigate,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Information about hospital quality is helpful as they make decisions for their health, and Marin General Hospital has distinguished itself as an exceptional organization for Pulmonary and Stroke Care.”
For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for almost 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated comparative outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states and the District of Columbia. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
