MarinHealth Medical Center Performs It’s First-Ever TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) Procedure
New procedure offers patients a minimally invasive approach to carotid intervention, reducing the risk of stroke
MarinHealth Medical Center is pleased to announce that it has performed its first-ever TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) today. TCAR is a clinically proven minimally invasive treatment option for carotid artery disease which occurs when fatty deposits, or plaques, clog the blood vessels, greatly increasing the risk of stroke.
Vascular surgeon Dr. Allan M. Conway successfully performed the state-of-the-art procedure on a patient with severe carotid artery stenosis who was at high-risk for complications with open surgery (carotid artery endarterectomy). Dr. Conway was able to place a stent in the carotid artery to stabilize the plaque, preventing the risk of stroke. Using the TCAR technique, he placed a tube directly into the carotid artery and connected it to a system which then directed blood flow away from the patient’s brain, preventing any loose plaque from reaching the brain.
“It is a very exciting day to bring this new technology to MarinHealth,” said Allan M. Conway, MD. “It was a great team effort. We look forward to educating patients about this minimally invasive approach to carotid intervention, while maintaining a low perioperative risk of stroke, comparable to the gold standard of carotid endarterectomy.”
Dr. Allan Conway joined the MarinHealth vascular surgery team in November of 2022 and immediately began seeing patients at MarinHealth Vascular Surgery, A UCSF Health Clinic in Greenbrae, California. Prior to joining MarinHealth, Dr. Conway was a vascular surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City for 10 years, where he served as an Associate Professor of Surgery and Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency.
“We are extremely grateful to Dr. Conway and his talented team for bringing this highly innovative and lifesaving procedure to MarinHealth and the community at large,” said Dr. David Klein, CEO of MarinHealth. “Once again, MarinHealth stands at the forefront of clinical excellence, providing our patient populace with the most cutting-edge procedures.”
