Payment Options

Payment Options

MarinHealth has many options to assist you with payment of your hospital bill. Copies of the hospital’s Uninsured Patient Discount Policy, Prompt-Pay Discount Policy, Financial Assistance Policy, as well as government program applications, are available at Patient Registration and our Patient Financial Services office. The Health Consumer Alliance can assist you with understanding the billing and payment process.

Accountable Care Organizations

MarinHealth has partnered with Meritage Medical Network, an Accountable Care Organization (ACO). Meritage Medical Network represents local member physicians, including many physicians at MarinHealth. Meritage ACO provides healthcare and administers benefits for their members in both Marin and Sonoma Counties.

Financial Assistance: Help Paying Your Bill

Uninsured patients who can’t pay their bill may be eligible for financial assistance, depending on the patient’s income and family size. All potential payer sources must be exhausted before a patient is eligible for financial assistance.

Insured Prompt Pay Discount

Insured patients who are willing to pay their estimated liability in full, on or before date of service or discharge, will receive a 25% prompt pay discount (excludes government programs).

Medicare

This hospital is an approved Medicare provider. All services billed to Medicare follow federal guidelines and procedures. Medicare has a Coordination of Benefits (COB) clause; a provision that allow families with two wage earners covered by health benefit plans to receive up to 100 percent coverage for medical services. At the time of service, you will be asked to answer questions to help us determine the primary insurance carrier paying for your visit. This is called an MSP Questionnaire, and it is required by federal law. We need your assistance in providing accurate information so we bill the correct insurance company. Medicare deductibles and co-insurance are covered by your secondary insurance. If you do not have secondary insurance, you will be asked to pay this portion of your bill or establish a payment plan. Should you be unable to pay these amounts, we will help you determine whether you qualify for a state-funded program.

Medi-Cal and Government Program Eligibility

If you need help paying your hospital bill, we have staff that can assist you in applying for government assistance from Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, and California Children’s Services. For Medi-Cal we will need a copy of your Medi-Cal card for the current month. Medi-Cal does not pay for the cost of a private room unless medically necessary.

Payment Plans

Patient account balances are due upon receipt. However, if you are unable to pay your full balance, you may choose to make payment arrangements to pay your bill over time. These arrangements are interest free for low-income, uninsured patients and certain income-eligible patients with high medical costs. A Financial Agreement must be signed with Patient Financial Services regarding these types of arrangements.

Self-Pay Patients

Within the first 90 days following your discharge from the hospital, you will receive three statements and at least one phone call from our billing office. If payment arrangements are not established, and no payments are made during that time, your bill will be handed over to a collection agency.

Self Pay Discount

MarinHealth offers a 40% discount for self pay patients on hospital inpatient or outpatient charges. An additional 10% prompt-pay discount will apply if you pay on or before your service date or discharge date.
