ImPACT Neurocognitive Testing

Concussions are a major concern for athletes, especially those who play contact sports. What’s more, because many athletes are competitive by nature, they have a dangerous tendency to keep concussion symptoms to themselves so they can get back in the game. CIHW Athletic Training uses Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) to aid physicians in evaluating potential concussions. This scientifically validated computerized neurocognitive evaluation system is a medically accepted best practice, developed by clinical experts in concussions. Nationwide, ImPACT is used by more than 7,400 high schools, over a thousand colleges and universities, MLB, NHL, NFL, WWE, and even Cirque du Soleil.

Based on a vast clinical research database, ImPACT provides an evidence-based overall approach to concussion management through a five-step protocol:

  1. Pre-season baseline testing and education
  2. An athlete suffers a suspected concussion
  3. Post injury testing and treatment plan, in which the athlete is retested 24-72 hours after injury
  4. Athlete is cleared for non-contact activity if he or she is symptom free and within a normal range of the pre-concussion baseline test
  5. Return to play (or not) is determined by a concussion specialist

Following the ImPACT model, CIHW Athletic Training offers educational workshop to educate athletes, parents, coaches and teachers about concussions. We perform ImPACT neurocognitive and balance testing on all athletes who participate in our Athletic Training program. This provides a baseline against which to evaluate the effects of a possible concussion. Electronic copies of ImPACT reports and balance assessment scores are provided to athletes over 18 and to the parents of athletes who are still minors. If an athlete experiences a possible concussion during a sporting event, our athletic trainers evaluate him or her onsite. The results can be used to:

  • Assess and communicate the athlete’s post-concussion status to coaches, parents, clinicians, and the affected athlete
  • Help health care professionals track post-concussion recovery of cognitive processes
  • Make safe return to play decisions
  • Evaluate and meet a student athlete’s academic needs following concussion

Our program offers ImPACT as an add-on service. The rates are included below.
