Staying Active at Home
Fitness & Exercise While Social Distancing
As we continue to spend more time at home due to the current novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, it can be tempting to spend more time relaxing and sitting still. While it may be beneficial to take some time to relax every once in a while, falling into sedentary behaviors can wreak havoc on your overall fitness and health, and can lead to aches and pains. Below are some tips to help you keep your body healthy while you stay home and continue to practice social distancing.
Get Up and Stretch
Falling into a sedentary lifestyle can lead to a multitude of conditions, including joint, bone, and muscle pain. Remember to get up and get moving every day to maintain your bone and joint health. Get up and stretch once each hour or set aside an hour each day — each of these adds to your weekly total of recommended exercise.
Go for a Walk or Run
Although it is advised to stay out of public or crowded spaces, you are still able to head out into the great outdoors for exercise to break up your at-home routine. Take your dog out for a walk, or go for a jog to enjoy some fresh air, but be sure to follow proper social distancing protocols. Make sure to remain at least six feet away from others and wear a cloth face covering if you encounter others on your path.
Take a Dance Break
Missing your time at your gym right now? You might be finding it difficult to replicate your exercise routine at home. But there’s one workout that only requires your body, dancing. Dancing is an excellent source of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, a great family activity, and it’s a whole lot of fun! All you have to do is select your favorite songs and get moving!
